Magellan Healthcare, NeuroFlow Partner to Address Gaps in Behavioral Health Care



Magellan Healthcare, the behavioral division of Magellan Health, is in partnership with NeuroFlow, a health technology company, to make behavioral health care more accessible and better coordinated.

The collaborative care model is aimed at health plans and health care providers and aims to “better provide behavioral health services to those who need them in primary or specialized care,” said Caroline Carney, MD, Chief Medical Officer of Magellan Health. Fierce health.

It enhances this access with screening and behavioral health care through the NeuroFlow app. The goal is to help providers identify underdiagnosed and undertreated mild to moderate risk conditions before they get worse.

One of the benefits of the technology is that screening results are recorded in a dashboard in the patient’s electronic health record, which the provider can easily access and discuss during the visit. The patient also has access to clinical content throughout their treatment. And technology enables continuity of care, Carney said, which has kept collaborative care from truly thriving in the past.

A bonus of the technology is how quickly it can be implemented, Carney noted, with a lead time of just a few days. Registered clinical social workers, who act as care managers, monitor the app dashboard and can report patient concerns or behaviors to a Magellan psychiatrist or the patient’s primary care provider. By working together, they create a “triangle of care” that eases the burden of provider testing, according to Carney.

While it may be difficult for providers to see this model as complementary to their own work, so far the response has been “overwhelming,” Carney said, adding that they “want this kind of support”. And, since they can bill payers for collaborative care, it’s a “win-win”.

Payers are also excited about the model, Carney said, because it has been shown to reduce the overall cost of care, which means fewer reimbursements as well as greater accessibility to care for their members who have it. Not needed anymore.

Magellan’s clinical team will use NeuroFlow’s cloud platform to receive various types of support, including communication channels, electronic medical records, artificial intelligence-assisted at-risk patient reports, and personalized clinical content. .
